SEM is the largest wholly Newfoundland and Labrador owned and operated multidisciplinary consulting firm in the province. It is registered as an Inuit Business with the Nunatsiavut Government and is considered as an Aboriginal Business under Federal Government criteria.
The SEM owners and equal partners are Ron Webb, an Inuk residing in Nain; Gus Dicker, an Inuk residing in Nain; and Leroy Metcalfe, an Inuk originally from Nain, now residing in St. John’s. The company has offices in Nain, Lab West, and St. John’s, with a core staff of 20, seasonally growing to over 40. In addition, SEM has developed a network of senior advisors who are available as-needed to provide their experience and insights.
Since its formation in 2002, the company has focused on work opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador. While we have developed capacity to offer quality service to major industry players, we are still available to assist with small scale plans, too.
The company was formed initially to capitalize on environmental opportunities made available through the Voisey’s Bay Nickel Mine/Mill Project in northern Labrador. Since then we have expanded our client portfolio such that we have added most major corporations with a stake in our province’s rich natural resources. In addition to work undertaken in Newfoundland and Labrador, SEM has also completed work assignments in Nova Scotia, Nunavut and Sweden.
SEM has grown significantly since its formation. Through its network of associations with other environmental and engineering firms it is able to offer clients customized study teams familiar with local regulators and proponents, augmented by a broad range and depth of services available from this network.
