On behalf of our client, SEM is recruiting a Hydraulic Turbine–Generator Mechanical Engineer to support major electrical infrastructure projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Reporting to the Lead Engineer within the Major Projects Department, the Hydraulic Turbine–Generator Mechanical Engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting the engineering, manufacture and installation of large hydroelectric generating assets.
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated motivated individual with communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and leadership abilities. While the position is mechanical in focus, a strong working knowledge of electrical, electromagnetic, and control systems related to hydraulic turbine-generator equipment is required.
• Participate as part of the engineering technical team in the review of feasibility, front-end, and detailed engineering designs for new-build and refurbishment projects.
• Prepare and review technical specifications, engineering reports, and supporting documentation.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations on their application.
• Consult with Operations and internal stakeholders to ensure alignment of new and refurbished generating equipment with operational and business needs.
• Research and analyze historical design documentation and operating data to support engineering decisions.
• Prepare technical procurement documentation for the design, supply, and construction of equipment and services.
• Conduct technical evaluations of bids and provide recommendations.
• Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, safety-by-design workshops, risk reviews, and project meetings.
• Review consultant and manufacturer calculations, assumptions, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with safety requirements, industry standards, and NL Hydro standards and practices.
• Respond to technical and site-related inquiries, including troubleshooting and investigations as required.
• Provide input into project cost estimates and schedules.
• Deliver on-site technical and construction support to internal teams and contractors.
• Perform quality assurance and quality control oversight during design, manufacture, construction, testing, and commissioning phases.
• Actively promote and support a strong safety culture where “Nobody Gets Hurt.”
• Review and ensure the quality and completeness of as-built documentation, operation and maintenance manuals, and project close-out deliverables.
• Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from a recognized university.
• Eligibility for registration with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).
• Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience, including several years in project execution.
• Experience in the design, manufacture, installation, operation, or maintenance of large rotating power-generation equipment.
• Experience with a turbine-generator OEM and/or an electric utility is considered an asset.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Some travel may be required.
