Do you have a passion for birds, enjoy spending time outdoors, and thrive in rugged environments? We’re looking for a Bird Survey Technician to contribute to critical conservation work during the breeding season.
As a Bird Survey Technician, you’ll play a key role in monitoring and minimizing disturbances to nesting birds during their critical breeding season. This is a hands-on field position that demands a combination of birding expertise, outdoor skills, and a commitment to safety.
Contract runs from May 5 until November 7, 2025.
• Conduct bird surveys in diverse habitats, identifying landbirds by sight and sound.
• Use behavioral cues to assess breeding activity.
• Record detailed observations and manage data collection using GPS technology.
• Navigate and work in remote areas, including ATV and boat use when applicable.
• Collaborate with the team to ensure minimal disturbance to nesting birds.
• Participate in all required safety training, first aid certifications, and site orientations.
Residency: Must live in Labrador West or Goose Bay.
Birding Expertise: Proficiency in identifying landbirds by sight and sound, with a strong understanding of breeding behaviors. Experience with bird atlas projects is an asset.
Field Skills: Ability to use GPS equipment and tolerate field conditions, including exposure to biting insects.
Physical Fitness: Must be reasonably fit to handle the physical demands of the job, including hiking long distances over uneven and difficult terrain.
Preferred Skills
• Experience operating ATVs and boats.
• Valid driver’s license.
Training & Safety
Successful candidates must complete:
• Safety training courses relevant to fieldwork.
• First Aid certification.
• Site orientations prior to beginning surveys.
